Thông tin về một giáo sư Việt Nam giữ vị trí giám đốc nghiên cứu ở Viện hàn lâm Kỹ thuật hoàng gia Anh – giáo sư Dương Quang Trung, hiện công tác tại Đại học Queen’s Belfast (Vương quốc Anh) – hẳn là bất ngờ với không ít người.

Ở dải đất miền Trung hằng năm chịu nhiều thiên tai, bão lũ… con người như kiên trì hơn, bền gan hơn. Sự vượt khó này đã giúp tôi rất nhiều trong thời gian học và công tác. Năm 2020, thành tích của giáo sư Trung là một trong những điểm nhấn nổi bật của các nỗ lực mà cộng đồng khoa học Việt Nam đã và đang đóng góp với thế giới.

Trong những ngày dịch COVID-19 hoành hành, giáo sư Dương Quang Trung dường như có nhiều thời gian hơn và anh đã chia sẻ với Tuổi Trẻ Xuân về hành trình nghiên cứu và cuộc sống của anh – một nhà khoa học Việt Nam – nơi xứ người.

Sứ mệnh chinh phục mạng 6G

Hằng năm, Viện hàn lâm Kỹ thuật hoàng gia Anh lựa chọn một số nhà khoa học uy tín, đang theo đuổi những đề tài đột phá, có ảnh hưởng lớn đến đời sống… để bổ nhiệm các vị trí giám đốc nghiên cứu, nghiên cứu viên cao cấp và hỗ trợ kinh phí cho các dự án này.

Công nhận giám đốc nghiên cứu rất danh giá. Các ứng viên từ hàng trăm trường ĐH và viện nghiên cứu trên khắp Vương quốc Anh phải trải qua nhiều vòng xét duyệt rất khắt khe.

Năm 2020, viện chỉ bổ nhiệm 4 giám đốc nghiên cứu các dự án về kháng sinh, giảm thiểu việc sử dụng năng lượng – khí thải, đều là những vấn đề thách thức toàn cầu.

Riêng giáo sư Dương Quang Trung theo đuổi những nghiên cứu mạng công nghệ hoàn toàn “chưa ra đời”: mạng 6G.

Có lẽ phải đợi đến thập niên 2030, 6G mới ra mắt nhân loại bởi thế giới chỉ đang ở thời kỳ đầu của mạng 5G. Cũng chỉ một số quốc gia “tốp trên” đang khai thác thương mại 5G. Trung Quốc vẫn đang dẫn đầu về 5G.

Ở Đông Nam Á, Thái Lan là nước đầu tiên cung cấp dịch vụ 5G thương mại, tháng 3-2020, trong khi các nước còn lại hiện trong giai đoạn thử nghiệm. Khảo sát của ABI Research cho thấy thời gian tới sẽ đến lượt những thị trường mới nổi bùng nổ 5G với tốc độ tăng trưởng hằng năm 26%.

Thế mà nhiều nhóm nghiên cứu trên thế giới, trong đó có giáo sư Dương Quang Trung và cộng sự, đang phác thảo những đường nét đầu tiên của mạng “đời sau” là 6G.

Anh giải thích các mạng viễn thông phải được nghiên cứu lý thuyết từ rất lâu trước khi áp dụng vào thực tế. Chẳng hạn, để có mạng 5G đang áp dụng thì nghiên cứu đã nhen nhóm từ những năm 2010.

Cứ mỗi 10 năm, một thế hệ mạng mới ra đời để đáp ứng những nhu cầu phát sinh trong sản xuất và đời sống. Các nhóm nghiên cứu sẽ dự đoán những ứng dụng công nghệ trong thập niên tới để tạo nền tảng mạng đáp ứng đủ mạnh.

Chẳng hạn vào những năm 2030, công nghệ 6G có thể tạo ra một tương lai mang lại lợi ích cho việc chẩn đoán, phẫu thuật y tế từ xa, sử dụng xe tự lái, công nghệ thực tế ảo và tăng cường cho giáo dục, chăm sóc sức khỏe, giải trí.

Vì thế, 6G không chỉ tập trung vào tốc độ dữ liệu nhanh hơn mà còn đề cao khả năng kết nối, liên kết số lượng lớn các thiết bị tự động. 6G sẽ giải quyết nhu cầu cụ thể của các thiết bị Internet của vạn vật (IoT) bằng cách đạt hai mục tiêu: duy trì độ tin cậy cực cao (99,999%) của 5G và giảm thiểu quá trình kết nối chậm giữa thời gian truyền và nhận dữ liệu.

Những kết nối chưa bao giờ đứt gãy

Giáo sư Dương Quang Trung sinh ra và lớn lên ở đô thị cổ Hội An (Quảng Nam). Sau khi tốt nghiệp Trường ĐH Bách khoa (ĐH Quốc gia TP.HCM), anh nhận học bổng toàn phần bậc thạc sĩ của Chính phủ Hàn Quốc, rồi học bổng toàn phần tiến sĩ tại Thụy Điển.

Đầu năm 2013, anh được nhận vào ngạch giáo sư của ĐH Queen’s Belfast – thuộc nhóm 20 trường ĐH hàng đầu ở Anh – mà không phải trải qua giai đoạn hậu tiến sĩ. Tháng 8-2020, anh được bổ nhiệm giáo sư thực thụ tại ĐH Queen’s Belfast, là một trong những trường hợp bổ nhiệm nhanh nhất trong gần 200 năm lịch sử của trường.

Hội đồng Anh (British Council) – tổ chức quốc tế về hợp tác văn hóa và giáo dục của Vương quốc Anh – đánh giá giáo sư Dương Quang Trung là nhà khoa học trẻ xuất sắc, người giành được nhiều giải thưởng và tài trợ nghiên cứu khoa học hàng triệu bảng Anh.

Trò chuyện với Tuổi Trẻ, anh Trung tâm sự con đường đưa mình đến nghiên cứu mạng 6G như một cái duyên. Ngành viễn thông có thể ứng dụng vào trong nhiều lĩnh vực thực tế của cuộc sống như môi trường (thiên tai, ô nhiễm không khí, xử lý rác thải nhựa), nông nghiệp thông minh, thành phố thông minh, sức khỏe đời sống.

Trả lời câu hỏi “Trong hành trình làm khoa học của mình, đâu là khó khăn lớn nhất mà anh đã trải qua?”, anh cười: “Tôi đi học và nghiên cứu một mạch, không đứt quãng. Nhiều khó khăn, trở ngại của tôi có lẽ cũng giống như với các nhà khoa học khác nên tôi nghĩ không cần nhắc đến”.

Thật lạ, càng đi xa anh Trung càng gắn chặt với cố xứ. Từ đầu năm 2013 sau khi tốt nghiệp tiến sĩ ở Thụy Điển, anh thường về Việt Nam 4-5 lần một năm, tham gia giảng bài và hỗ trợ sinh viên trong nước, tổ chức các hội thảo khoa học, kết nối các nhà khoa học trong nước.

Từ năm 2015, anh đứng ra tổ chức một trường hè nghiên cứu khoa học, đến nay đã qua 5 lần. Các học viên tuyển chọn từ cả nước, được hướng dẫn nhiều kỹ năng để tìm học bổng, tìm kiếm đề tài nghiên cứu, viết bài cho các tập san khoa học, làm việc với giáo sư.

Một phần nhờ đó, sau 5 năm, hơn 100 bạn tham gia trường hè đã xin được những học bổng toàn phần theo học tiến sĩ tại các nước phát triển như Anh, Pháp, Mỹ, Canada, Úc.

Theo giáo sư Trung, khi tổ chức trường hè, anh muốn chia sẻ kinh nghiệm với các bạn trẻ rất tài năng nhưng còn thiếu những kỹ năng cần thiết. Nhiều bạn có khả năng rất tốt nhưng phải tự mày mò và gặp không ít khó khăn trong giai đoạn này.

Anh cho rằng cách đây gần 20 năm, mình cũng tự mình mò mẫm như thế, phải rất vất vả và mất nhiều thời gian. “Ngoài ra, tôi muốn lan tỏa niềm đam mê khoa học đến các bạn trẻ. Sau khi thành công, các bạn chắc chắn tiếp tục truyền lửa và giúp đỡ những thế hệ người Việt tiếp theo” – giáo sư Trung nói.

Anh Trung nhận xét riêng về các ngành khoa học kỹ thuật, sinh viên Việt Nam nhạy bén, giải quyết tốt các kiến thức cơ bản, các phần chuyên môn. Nhưng khi đương đầu với các vấn đề rộng, cần sự khái quát và tầm nhìn thì có lẽ không tốt bằng các nước phương Tây. Trong lớp học, các buổi hội thảo, thảo luận, sinh viên Việt Nam nhìn chung còn khá rụt rè.

Theo anh, lỗi một phần ở hệ thống giáo dục còn nặng tính lý thuyết và bỏ sót nhiều kỹ năng mềm cho sinh viên. Anh thường khuyến khích các bạn trẻ nên tìm thêm cơ hội ra nước ngoài học hỏi để mở mang tầm nhìn và biết được mình đang ở đâu, thiếu những gì để bổ sung.

Tết nơi xa không thể bằng quê nhà

Khi không khí Tết cận kề, chắc hẳn trong lòng mọi người xa xứ đều nhen lên một niềm bồi hồi, xốn xang khó tả. Tính ra đã ngót nghét 18 cái Tết kể từ ngày giáo sư Trung bước chân ra khỏi Việt Nam bắt đầu hành trình học tập và nghiên cứu. Trước khi sang Anh công tác tại ĐH Queen’s Belfast, anh hay về Hội An.

Nhưng đến nay đã 8 năm qua, cái Tết nơi phố cổ bên dòng sông Hoài dường như vẫn chỉ trong hoài niệm của anh. Do giảng dạy từ tháng 10 đến tháng 2 hằng năm, trùng với thời gian Tết ở Việt Nam, con cái lại đi học bên này nên việc sắp xếp về Việt Nam tương đối khó.

Cũng như nhiều người Việt tha hương, mỗi dịp Tết gia đình anh Trung đều chuẩn bị cúng ông bà, gói bánh chưng, đón giao thừa. “Nhưng tất nhiên không thể bằng ở quê nhà – anh bùi ngùi – Tết phải có không khí của những ngày…

Tết, kéo dài từ 23 âm lịch khi bắt đầu cúng ông Táo, người người đi chợ Tết, mua hoa, sắm đồ, kéo dài qua giao thừa và những ngày nghỉ ở bên gia đình. Ở Anh không có được không khí này. Có thời gian tôi làm việc ở Mỹ, tại một cộng đồng nhiều người Việt, nhưng Tết ở đấy cũng không thể so với ở quê hương” – anh chia sẻ.

Nhiều năm trôi qua, ký ức giáo sư Trung vẫn in đậm những cái Tết thời sinh viên. Hễ nghe gió xuân về, chàng sinh viên xứ Quảng đang xa nhà lại bồn chồn chờ đến ngày về quê ăn Tết. Để rồi cứ vào giờ giao thừa, anh lại cùng bạn bè dạo khắp các đường phố cổ Hội An.

Mùi trầm hương của các nhà mặt phố đốt cúng giao thừa quyện vào mùi không khí đặc sánh và ẩm sương của đêm khuya như có một sức hút đặc biệt. “Mỗi lần sau này xa nhà, cứ đến dịp Tết, tôi lại ngồi bần thần nhớ lại những cảm giác đó. Ngỡ như chỉ mới đây thôi” – anh nhớ lại.

Giáo sư Dương Quang Trung được trao tặng giải thưởng Công trình nghiên cứu khoa học xuất sắc nhất tại Hội nghị ngành viễn thông lớn nhất của thế giới IEEE Globecom vào các năm 2016 và 2019.

Giáo sư Trung cũng từng là người đoạt giải thưởng danh giá Research Fellowship (2015-2020) dành cho các nhà nghiên cứu trẻ của Viện hàn lâm Kỹ thuật hoàng gia Anh cách đây 5 năm (cả nước Anh năm đó chỉ có 8 người được trao giải cho tất cả các lĩnh vực khoa học kỹ thuật) và được nhận giải thưởng uy tín Newton Prize 2017.

Vào tháng 11-2020, anh được xếp hạng trong danh sách các nhà khoa học có ảnh hưởng nhất trên thế giới theo thành tựu trọn đời (tạp chí PLoS Biology của Mỹ công bố).

Ở phương Tây, các trường đại học, viện nghiên cứu thường không phân biệt bạn đến từ đâu, màu da gì hay tôn giáo nào.

Làm khoa học rất bình đẳng, hễ có kết quả tốt, đóng góp cho xã hội dù quốc tịch nào cũng sẽ được ghi nhận. Cách đây 10-15 năm, số người Việt ở vị trí chủ chốt trong các trường đại học, viện nghiên cứu nước ngoài chưa nhiều.

Giờ đây con số này tăng lên đáng kể. Những thế hệ trẻ 30-40 tuổi đang công tác tại các trường, viện lớn không hiếm.

Đây là một tín hiệu tốt. Dẫu vậy, nếu so với các nước cùng khu vực như Ấn Độ, Iran, Trung Quốc, số lượng các nhà khoa học Việt nắm giữ những vị trí chủ chốt còn khiêm tốn. Để có thể bắt kịp được, chúng ta cần sự hỗ trợ và giúp đỡ lẫn nhau của cộng đồng khoa học Việt. Và tôi tin là chúng ta sẽ làm được điều này”.
