Mặc dù nhiều bí ẩn xung quanh quá trình ướp xác, nhưng đây vẫn được xem là thành tựu y học Ai Cập cổ đại.

Người Ai Cập cổ đại tin một phần linh hồn của con người sẽ mãi mãi gắn liền với thể xác. Cho nên, để bảo vệ những linh hồn ở thế giới bên kia, họ phải giữ phần thể xác không bị phân hủy. Vậy thì làm thế nào để tạo ra một xác ướp vẫn nguyên vẹn qua hàng ngàn năm?

Trong những ngày đầu tiên, xác ướp do người Ai Cập cổ đại tạo ra không tồn tại quá lâu. Bởi vì phương pháp ướp xác ban đầu rất đơn giản, họ chỉ bọc quanh thi thể bằng một miếng vải. Trước tiên, sau khi một người qua đời, thi thể sẽ được đến một phòng nhỏ chuyên ướp xác. Tại đây, xác người chết được đặt một bàn cao khoảng nửa mét, xung quanh là nhiều công cụ kỳ lạ. Khi mọi thứ đã sẵn sàng, đầu tiên họ sẽ dùng một chiếc móc kim loại đặc biệt , đóng vào hộp sọ từ lỗ mũi và nhẹ nhàg khuấy cho đến khi tủy não chảy dọc theo mũi ra ngoài.

Sau khi lấy hết dịch não, họ đổ rượu vào bên trong, cũng từ đường mũi, để làm sạch và khử trùng.

Như chúng ta đã biết, khi một người chết vẫn có nhiều enzyme tiêu hóa và vi khuẩn trong các cơ quan nội tạng. Nếu để chúng lại, toàn bộ thi thể có thể nhanh chóng bị “nuốt chửng” từ bên trong. Để tránh tình trạng này, ở bước thứ 2 của quy trình ướp xác, người Ai Cập cổ đại sẽ rạch một đường ở bụng trái của người chết, lần lượt lấy ra toàn bộ gan, ruột, dạ dày, phổi và các cơ quan nội tạng khác.

Trái tim là bộ phận duy nhất được giữ lại trong thi thể. Bởi vì người Ai Cập tin rằng, trái tim chứa ý thức và tính cách của một người, sau khi chết sẽ bị “phán xét” nên phải giữ lại. Nhưng theo thống kê, chỉ có khoảng 25% xác ướp còn giữ trái tim bên trong. Do đó, nhiều người suy đoán, những xác ướp có trái tim có thể là những người khi còn sống có địa vị cao. Cũng có người cho rằng, nếu trái tim không còn nữa thì người đó sẽ không thể hồi sinh.

Không giống như phần não bị vứt đi, các nội tạng khi lấy ra đều được làm sạch. Sau đó làm sạch nước bằng muối và ngâm nội tạng với dầu ăn hoặc nhựa thông lỏng. Tiếp đó lưu trữ trong một vật chứa có hình dạng như một cái lọ, gọi là bình canopic.

Bước tiếp theo, rửa sạch xác người rỗng bên trong bằng rượu dừa và hương liệu, sau đó dùng một vài vật liệu để “bọc” xác chết tạm thời. Các bộ phận khác nhau sẽ dùng những vật liệu và cách thức khác nhau, như với hộp sọ rỗng, người ta sẽ dùng nhựa cây đổ vào thông qua đường mũi. Một thời gian ngắn sau, những người ướp xác sẽ dùng nước sông Nile “tắm rửa” cho thi thể lần cuối cùng. Đây là một công đoạn mang ý nghĩa tôn giáo. Sau khi “tắm rửa”, xác người chuyển sang bước loại bỏ độ ẩm. 

Cách đơn giản nhất là sử dụng Natron (một loại muối mỏ) khô phủ bên trong và bên ngoài thi thể. Natron khô là thành phần chính của các mỏ Natron tự nhiên, có thể không màu, trắng, xám hoặc vàng do lẫn tạp chất. Nó thường được dùng để làm soda, xút,… được sử dụng rộng rãi trong ngành công nghiệp và gia đình hiện nay. 

Vào thời cổ đại, Natron là một vật liệu quan trọng để giữ xác ướp nguyên vẹn theo thời gian. Không chỉ diệt vi khuẩn và ký sinh trùng, nó còn có thể loại bỏ nước ở các mô cơ thể, ngăn chặn quá trình phân hủy xác chết. 

Trong một thời gian, người hiện đại đã nghĩ người Ai Cập cổ pha loãng Natron khô rồi đặt vào bên trong xác ướp. Mãi đến thế kỷ 20, các nhà nghiên cứu mới phát hiện sự thật không phải như vậy, Natron khô được phủ đầy bên trong lẫn ngoài xác chết và được thay mới mỗi ngày. Tuy nhiên, có một số xác ướp đã được ngâm trực tiếp vào dung dịch Natron. Nhưng phương pháp này rất phức tạp vì xác chết phải được xử lý kĩ và vết rạch ở bụng trái phải được khâu lại. So với Natron khô, dung dịch Natron có thể bảo quản xác ướp tốt hơn. 

Sau khoảng một tháng, người ta sẽ đặt vỏ cây quế, nhựa thông,… đầy khoang bụng của xác chết. Kế đó, dùng kim và chỉ khâu vết rạch ở bụng lại. 

Ở bước tiếp theo, người Ai Cập cổ đại sẽ thoa một lớp nhựa cây lên toàn bộ thi thể, sau đó dùng tay xoa hỗn hợp dầu sáp lên trên. 

Bước quan trọng nhất là quấn thi thể bằng vải lanh, họ sẽ quấn phần đầu trước, sau đó là toàn bộ phần thân của thi thể. Sau nhiều lớp vải lanh, cuối cùng họ bọc xác ướp bằng một tấm vải khổ lớn. Xác ướp trông khá cao vì được quấn nhiều lớp vải lanh quanh người, nhưng thực tế người Ai Cập cổ đại thường không cao.

Để khuôn mặt không bị phân hủy và biến dạng, họ đã dùng nhựa thông thoa lên phần mặt. Sau đó dùng sữa bò, rượu vang, sáp ong, hương liệu, nhựa thông, nhựa đường,… để làm màu và “trang điểm” cho xác ướp. Nhưng điều này khó mà khôi phục dáng vẻ ban đầu của người chết. Với phần hốc mắt trũng sâu, họ sẽ nhét đầy đá vào bên trong. Thời vua Ramesses III, người Ai Cập cổ đã tạo ra nhãn cầu bằng sứ thay vì đá như trước.

Bước cuối cùng là đội tóc giả, mặc quần áo, đeo trang sức và dùng một chút nước hoa. Trong cả quá trình, người Ai Cập cổ phải niệm chú liên tục, kéo dài đến ngày thứ 52. Ngày thứ 68 – 70 là lúc nhập quan, đặt xác ướp và cỗ quan tài đã chuẩn bị sẵn.

Phòng ướp xác lúc nào cũng có một lượng lớn các thi thể cần xử lý. Và các “thợ ướp xác” bận rộn đến mức không thể tránh khỏi việc ướp nhầm những thứ khác như gián, bọ,… Thỉnh thoảng, họ còn nhầm thẻ tên của các xác ướp.
